Cost-efficient and environmentally friendly wind energy
Gearbox failure is the primary reason for downtime in a wind turbine and is extremely costly to replace. One of the main and most damaging causes of gearbox failure is ferrous metal contamination under 10 microns in size which leads to bearing failure. Metal contamination, the primary contaminant produced by gear wear, suspends in the lubrication oil causing premature bearing failure as it lubricates the components. Ferrous metal has been the most understated wear contaminant in most lubrication, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and the ability for traditional filtration to filter ferrous metal has been greatly over stated.
“A major key to reducing costs and environmental impact in wind energy is employing effective reusable filtration” says Roger Simonson, President One Eye Industries. “The ADD-Vantage 9000 is a cleanable magnetic filtration system that filters gear oil to sub micron levels, protecting the bearings and reducing the overall wear of the components. Our filters will increase up-time and drastically reduce maintenance costs, not to mention are easily cleaned and reusable for over ten years which will improve your environmental footprint.”
Early failure of the gearbox is extremely costly as it reduces performance and production is halted for repairs. Another major cost as well as an environmental concern in the wind energy industry is in the disposal of traditional filtration. The most commonly used traditional filters are expensive, have a short one time operational life and are costly to dispose of.
“Wind energy is a wonderful environmentally friendly energy source” says Simonson. “When there is a technology that compliments and increases the positive environmental impact wind energy has and increases productivity and reduces costs, it is important to take notice.
