Demonstration projects at Hydrogen Expo USA
SMEs find growth market in hydrogen technologies
Alpen, 21-Feb-05 – At Hydrogen Expo(TM) USA from March 29 to April 1, 2005 in Washington, DC, Ztek Corporation of Woburn, MA will be showcasing its current hydrogen demonstration projects. Ztek is one of many small and mid-sized companies (SMEs) seizing the opportunities which the market for hydrogen and fuel cell products offers. The Hydrogen Expo USA technology exhibition features more than 50 companies from around the world, which have made clean energy technologies their business.
Ztek is partnered with Pacific Gas & Electric Company to develop a hydrogen fueling station minutes from San Francisco International Airport in San Carlos, CA that will feature Ztek's 'High Performance Steam Reformer' (HPSR) and support the hydrogen needs of the California Fuel Cell Partnership's vehicle fleet. The company has also installed a 25kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) at Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, CT for the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund. This system will provide a portion of the park's baseload power as well as heating and air conditioning for the visitor center.
While Ztek's principal objective has been to produce a high efficiency, cost competitive and compact operating fuel cell system, the maturity of its steam reformer technology has led to the decision to commercialize this product. According to a recently published report the worldwide hydrogen generation, storage and delivery device market is currently estimated at 702 million US dollars. The market is expected to reach nearly 1.5 billion US dollars as it annually grows at a rate of 15.8% through 2008, thus offering compelling business opportunities for large corporations and SMEs alike. SMEs often provide valuable know how and technologies as Tier 1 suppliers for larger entities or multi-national / multi-partner demonstration projects.
Demonstration projects are vital to prove the functionality and reliability of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. SMEs in particular benefit from projects with partners such as the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP) with a strong international reputation for their efforts to commercialize the technology. Recently, the CaFCP named German manufacturer Weh GmbH the recipient of its incentive award for demonstrating that the company's hydrogen fuel nozzle meets industry performance standards. The award grants a manufacturer 50 percent of the cost, up to 25,000 US dollars, for third-party testing. CaFCP and Weh also exhibit at Hydrogen Expo USA.
