Eaton solutions help power successful first flight of airbus A350’sTrent XWB Engine
CLEVELAND -- In February, Airbus successfully conducted the first flight of the A350’s Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine, which features significant content provided by diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation. Eaton designed lightweight and innovative low-pressure fuel and pneumatic systems for the Trent XWB and also played an extensive role in supplying equipment for engine build-up sub-systems, which encompass a broad portfolio of components and parts customized for the XWB.
“Eaton’s breadth of manufacturing capabilities for engine build-up and systems integration experience were instrumental factors in our involvement in the Trent XWB program,” said Bradley J. Morton, president of Eaton’s Aerospace Group. “Our advancements in fluid conveyance, fuel systems and debris monitoring gave Eaton the capabilities to supply a large amount of content on the Trent XWB and increase our presence in the engine market.”
Since the contract award in 2009, Eaton’s integrated product team members have been based onsite at Rolls-Royce in Derby, United Kingdom, to support engine design and development efforts, in coordination with additional Eaton engineering and integrated product teams in India, the U.K. and the United States.
On engine build-up sub-systems such as Trent XWB, Eaton’s global engineering team performs detailed installation design, stress analysis, component design, component verification and validation planning. These collaborative efforts lead to optimized components and lightweight installations with proven reliability in critical aerospace environments, which reduces customers’ supply-chain tasks and associated costs.
In addition, by providing complete engine build-up sub-systems coupled with onsite engineering support, Eaton optimizes the significant number of engine interfaces and replaces expensive, complex tubing and ducting with more modular products specifically designed for easier, faster installation and removal.

Eaton is responsible for the design, development, manufacture and certification of the low-pressure fuel system, starter air system, thermal ant-icing system, engine bleed air system along with sense and muscle lines, variable frequency generator system, power door opening system, fire-extinguisher system (Firex) and pylon drains.
The Trent XWB also features a dual-stage pump manufactured by Eaton that brings a long track record of quality, reliability and best-in-class performance, as well as an improved oil-debris monitoring system offering advancements in prognostic and diagnostic testing capabilities. The ODM system for the Trent XWB engine contains the Lubriclone debris separator, a quantitative debris monitor sensor and a signal conditioner.
