Eaton takes top honors in Pittsburgh green workplace challenge
PITTSBURGH -- Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced it has been recognized as a first place winner of Sustainable Pittsburgh’s 2011-2012 Pittsburgh Green Workplace Challenge (GWC). Sustainable Pittsburgh noted the significant regional impact on energy and water savings, and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions at Eaton’s Moon Township Electrical Sector - Americas headquarters. Eaton accepted the award at a ceremony held at Phipps Conservatory on Oct. 18, 2012.
“Eaton truly embraced the mission of the Green Workplace Challenge,” said Matt Mehalik, program manager of Sustainable Pittsburgh. “By applying smart, impactful sustainability practices, Eaton has demonstrated its commitment to making our region a better place to live and work.”
A group of Eaton employees, who volunteer to work on the Moon Township facility’s “Green Team,” led the effort to implement more sustainable and energy-efficient practices. The team distributed reusable mugs to every employee in the company, purchased a hybrid company vehicle, and planted trees surrounding the property that require little watering. These and other actions earned points in the challenge, but also made a lasting impact on the organization. Over the course of the competition, Eaton saved more than one million kilowatt hours of power, translating into $100,000 in energy savings.
“The Green Team has demonstrated what can be accomplished when passionate individuals come together to make a difference,” said Revathi Advathi, president - Electrical Sector, Americas Region, Eaton. “The team has showcased Eaton’s leadership in energy efficiency and helped to make our facility even more sustainable.”
The GWC is an initiative of Sustainable Pittsburgh’s Champions for Sustainability business network. Companies earn points for actions that demonstrate measurable change to implement. These actions also provide participating organizations with a baseline for comparison in the future. More than 50 companies participated in this year’s challenge, which began in September 2011. Throughout the competition, enough energy was saved to power nearly 6,000 average U.S. homes for one year and total energy savings amounted to $4.2 million.
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Sustainable Pittsburgh (SP) affects decision-making for the Pittsburgh region to integrate economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental quality bringing sustainable solutions to communities and businesses. Over the past 14 years, SP has proven adept at building coalitions for change on issues that get at the heart of sustainability for southwestern Pennsylvania.
