EcoCooling supported project is accepted onto the EU Code of Conduct for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres
We’re delighted to announce that the EU funded Boden Type One Data Centre (BTDC) project, of which EcoCooling is a consortium member, has been accepted on the EU Code of Conduct for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres. The application was made following the success the project has had in creating one of the world’s most efficient data centre.
As a participant in the code of conduct, the project will support a set of agreed commitments. The nature of the BTDC project means that it already meets the vast majority of these best practices, which includes everything from the physical building to the IT equipment.
What is the Code of Conduct?Launched in 2008, the European Code of Conduct for Data Centres was created in response to the increasing energy consumption in data centres. The overall objective for the programme is to reduce energy consumption in data centres throughout Europe, therefore reducing emissions and limiting global warming, whilst saving money.
The Code of Conduct is split into two main areas; the IT load and the facilities load. This is divided further into eight areas of responsibility, which encompass everything within a data centre from the racks to the operating system. This is to ensure there are no missed opportunities when it comes to reducing energy consumption.
The benefitsFundamentally, being a Code of Conduct Participant enables the BTDC project to further validate its findings and also provides the opportunity to identify any areas that could benefit from additional efficiency measures.
However, what’s most appealing to us here at EcoCooling is the platform that the programme provides for European stakeholders to discuss and further develop the Code of Conduct. The programme also validates something that the BTDC project has been trying to demonstrate, which is that data centres can be made efficient in a cost-effective way that doesn’t hamper their critical function.
Being a Participant is an important part of the BTDC project, which continues to operate at a PUE of less than 1.01. Find out more about the BTDC project and what it has achieved so far here.
