Ecotech engineer takes out Australian scientific research award
Don Zhao, engineer at Ecotech won the Metrology Society of Australia (MSA) Award on Thursday 20 October at the ninth biennial MSA conference dinner at Werribee Zoo in Victoria.
The MSA biennial Award recognises achievement and excellence in Australian metrology and the contribution metrologists make to the community. Metrology is the science of measurement and membership includes scientists, engineers and technicians working in government and industry from all fields of measurement in Australia and overseas.
Work nominated must be substantially produced in Australia and is for work completed, or that has gained scientific or industrial recognition, in the past five years and which has contributed to the Australian economy. The work must fall into one or more of the following categories: basic research, development, application or industry.
A calibration engineer at the Melbourne Head Office, Don led a team to successfully relocate the CSIRO wind tunnel to Ecotech and re-established this NATA-accredited service into the industry. Since the wind tunnel has been commercially running, he has undertaken a great deal of study and research to improve its performance.
“I appreciate the opportunity to have worked on the Ecotech Wind Tunnel project and enjoyed working with all my peers,” he said.
He performed principle and experimental study on wind tunnel blockage correction and also solved sonic anemometer intermittent output issues.
Currently, Don is investigating the upgrade of the wind tunnel facilities and test methods to fulfil wind energy requirements and ensure that it continues to serve more industries.
“I’m looking forward to continuing and enhancing measurement support for the wind energy and monitoring sector,” he said.
Prior to Ecotech, he was a research and calibration engineer for the Primary Metrology Centre, China Aerospace Group. He delivered a number of influential national primary metrology instrument research and development projects, including a static expansion pressure calibration system and an aerospace vacuum measurement system.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering from NWN University of China and a Master of Engineering Management from the University of Melbourne. He has also published more than 10 academic papers in this area.
