Effective carbon control on Antwerp agenda
Eighth European Gasification Conference draws international audience
Doubts over the cost and penalties of using fossil fuels along with the substantial investment required for the implementation of new and clean power generation will be just some of the talking points at the 8th European Gasification Conference in Antwerp, Belgium from 10-12 September 2007.
Organised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the conference is widely recognised as the leading European forum for discussing gasification technology. Speakers from around the world will contribute to a three-day programme examining all aspects of gasification and related technologies.
A strong industry presence is assured and it is anticipated that the conference will see Shell representatives announce their future approach to the application of gasification technology. GE is expected to set out its future plans following the recent acquisition of US solids pump specialists, Stamet Technology.
Conference Chairman, John Griffiths, said “This conference is undoubtedly the best networking opportunity in Europe this year for anyone interested in gasification technology. The programme includes papers, posters and exhibitors from five continents and delegates from around twenty countries including China, Australia, USA, Canada, Japan, Finland and Germany have already registered to attend.”
“Interest in the opportunities presented by gasification is greater than at any time in recent years and delegates in Antwerp will hear about the latest commercial and technical progress in the field at an event that offers outstanding value for money.”
Programme highlights include: a report on a new commercial scale gasifier in China, progress on the commercialisation of coal to liquids technology in the USA and a new oxy-fuel device based on rocket motor engineering that is leading the way to the next generation of gasification technology.
The potential to store all of Europe’s current and future CO2 emissions under the North Sea will be the subject of a keynote presentation by the British Geological Survey’s Dr Sam Holloway. Elsewhere on the programme, the international line up of speakers includes Dr Pierre Dechamps of the European Commission, Milton Catelin, Chief Executive of the World Coal Institute and Rien van Haperen, Director of the Nuon Magnum IGCC Project in the Netherlands. Shell Global Solutions President, Greg Lewin, will be the guest speaker at the conference dinner.
Gasification 8 opens on Monday 10 September with a one-day workshop entitled, “Financing Effective Carbon Control”. The workshop will assess the key issue of how gasification projects aimed at controlling CO2 emissions can attract the necessary finance for implementation.
Gasification 8 is the largest industry led gathering of its kind outside the USA, conference partners include Air Products, BP, GE, MAN, Shell, Uhde and UOP.
