Electric car prices could be slashed

Reaching a compromise on car batteries would signify a 'huge win' for the electric car industry, according to car giant Ford. Michael Tinskey, Ford's manager of vehicle electrification, said the battery migration would accelerate the achievement of the higher production volumes needed in order to slash prices of electric vehicles.
Speaking at the Plug-in 2009 conference in Long Beach last week, Mr Tinskey said that car manufacturers should keep battery commonality in mind as a 'long-term goal', according to Green Car Congress. He said: 'The biggest issue with batteries now is not necessarily the technology, it's the volume. If the battery manufacturers could get north of 100,000 packs, annually, prices come down drastically.
'If we could get movement to migrating to some commonality, overall that would be a huge win for the industry.' Ford currently has four hybrid cars on the auto market but has announced plans to launch further modes of green transport.
The manufacturing giant has already revealed plans to introduce new plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric cars. For the eighth time in nine months, the Ford Fiesta has been named Britain's best selling car. The Ford Focus has followed in second place.
