Energos due to open GBP 8m gasification plant
Energy technology business Energos is due to open its GBP 8 million Isle of Wight gasification plant in the middle of November.
Energos claims that the plant will be a UK first for using advanced thermal conversion technology in the gasification process.
The facility is part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs New Technology Demonstrator Programme, which aims to demonstrate innovative waste treatment technologies as alternatives to landfill.
An Energos spokeswoman said: “The local commercial and municipal waste from the island is delivered to the adjacent resource recovery facility operated by Biffa subsidiary Island Waste Services, the Isle of Wight Council’s integrated waste management contractor. The new facility extracts recyclable material from waste delivered to the site and residual waste is processed to provide fuel for the gasification plant.”
The gasification process converts residual waste into a gas by using the heat of partial combustion to free the compounds within the waste. The heat is recovered to produce steam and electricity. It generates 2.3MW of electricity from residual waste – enough to power more than 3,000 homes.
In June Energos was awarded preliminary Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) accreditation by regulator Ofgem for its plant. Full accreditation is expected once fuel measurements of the qualifying biodegradable portion of the waste are accepted by the regulator. The ROC is part of the Government’s Renewable Obligation, which is imposed on all electrical suppliers to ensure that 10% of all electricity in the UK is generated from renewable sources by 2010.
Energos managing director Nick Dawber said: “The project makes use of existing infrastructure and equipment (including boilers, steam turbine, and flue gas cleaning equipment) from a former incineration plant. This has caused a delay in opening because it has taken longer than anticipated to integrate the old equipment into the new control system. However, the final trials are running smoothly and we are very pleased to be achieving consistently low emissions performance.”
