Energy efficient companies in Ireland rewarded for best practice
The Irish Minister for Communications, Energy &, Natural Resources, Mr. Eamon Ryan, TD last week presented certificates on behalf of Certification Europe to the first five companies in Ireland to receive accredited IS 393 certification, demonstrating they have achieved best practice in energy management.
The presentation took place at The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. With the cost of energy becoming an increasing concern for companies due both to the financial implications and the impact that energy usage has on the environment, more and more companies in Ireland are beginning to take Energy Management seriously. Being able to demonstrate best practice in a field such as energy management is becoming critical. As Minister Ryan stated at this morning’s event “given the high cost and limited resources available internationally to generate energy, efficient energy use is a must for us all.
In an era where more and more technology is touted and where more and more ‘experts’ are emerging, it is critical that any claims of best practice in the area of energy management can be validated. This is where IS 393 can provide a role and where Certification Europe has taken the lead”. Ireland is one of very few countries in the world to have introduced an energy management standard.
The standard IS 393 is similar in its structure to standars such as ISO 14001, the international standard for best practice in environmental management. Certification Europe is the only certification body to have received accreditation from the state agency, the Irish National Accreditation Board, to operate as a certification body in this field. The companies presented with the certification this morning were Diageo, St. James’s Gate Brewery, HJ Heinz, Dundalk, Glanbia, Ballyragget, Abbott Pharmaceutical, Sligo &, Xerox, Dundalk. Dr. John Ryan, Commercial Director with Certification Europe says “achieving certification to IS 393 means that the company has been recognised as having invested in, and being committed to, operating in the most energy efficient manner. Certification also demonstrates that the organisation is taking energy efficiency seriously. Not only that, but that formal methods are in place to ensure improvement in energy efficiency over time.
Given the complexity and scale of the sites that have undergone the certification process the companies that have achieved certification are to be commended for the effort that has gone into place to achieve certification to this progressive standard.” Dr John Ryan has been the lead auditor for all IS 393 certifications handled to date by Certification Europe. He was also involved in the development of the technical guide for the standard.
