Energy Management at Naylor Industries PLC
Naylor Industries PLC is a long established, leading British manufacturer of building & construction products, specialised clay pipes, plastic drainage & ducting and concrete products with an unparalleled reputation in the market for quality and service.
Bridie Warner-Adsetts is the Group Operations Director at Naylor Industries and is responsible for the organisation's energy management. As part of the energyTEAM energy forums in 2013, Bridie gave a presentation that provided an insight into the development of their energy management with the support of energyTEAM.
Energy Procurement
Bridie explains how her team had previously had a somewhat naïve approach to energy management and tried to look after various elements in-house, including energy procurement. However, Bridie admits that as engineers and manufacturers, their expertise did not lie in the energy market and as a result they were unable to achieve energy contracts that offered them the best possible value for their organisation.
Naylor Industries therefore looked to outsource energy procurement so that they could instead spend time utilising the efforts of their team in reducing energy consumption and improving their environmental credentials and practices.
Energy Surveys
Naylor Industries commissioned a number of fruitless and 'basic' energy surveys from various suppliers before realising that they needed more than just a basic energy survey. Instead, they worked with energyTEAM on putting together an in-depth review of one of their main energy using sites in Yorkshire. As a result of this assessment, Naylor Industries were left with a document that they could put before the board to gain support for energy saving projects.
Green Team
To move forward with these projects, Naylor Industries wanted to put together a multi-disciplinary team that would give a fresh perspective and to challenge the way that they work. A ‘Green Team’, chaired by energyTEAM, was assembled to ensure that there would be continued progress with their energy projects.
Generating communication throughout the organisation has been extremely important to Naylor Industries in ensuring that their employees are informed, involved and engaged in the energy management process. The changes in attitudes were remarkable and by supporting employees, Naylor Industries were able to see immediate benefits.
Projects
Naylor Industries has looked at initiating a number of projects such as smart metering of utilities, installation of occupancy controlled lighting, green washrooms and the reduction of landfill. Bridie comments that this process has generated an enormous amount of communication throughout the organisation that has highlighted their focus on efficiency, which has motivated employees to get involved.
Awards
Naylor Industries has since been highly commended for the work that has gone in to energy and landfill reduction at their sites. This payback has produced a ripple of goodwill from employees to make things happen.
