Fuel efficiency measures are the top performing home improvements, new research has revealed.
A study by Halifax showed making changes to improve the energy efficiency of a home can add two and a half times the initial outlay cost to the value of a property.
The research found that other improvements to home security were second in popularity while redecorating finished in third.
Homeowners also cited overhauling a garden and converting a loft as value enhancing work property owners could carry out.
Stephen Noakes, commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group, said: 'This research has shown that it is often the low cost, straightforward home improvements that are perceived to add the most monetary value to a home. These can be simply carried out at minimum expense and without the need for specialised tools or materials.
' Energy efficiency measures may not only entice the 'green' buyer, but will also help to reduce heating bills and improve a home's energy efficiency, a report on which is part of the Home Information Pack.'
Previous research from Halifax showed that housing costs currently account for 23 per cent of a consumer's earnings.
