EnviTec Biogas wins award for innovative business model
“Drive Biogas” impresses German Energy Agency jury
“Drive Biogas” is the name of the business model from EnviTec Biogas AG that accoladed yesterday evening in Berlin by the German Energy Agency (dena). The biogas all-rounder from Lohne in Lower Saxony received the prize in recognition of its innovative and integrative entrepreneurial approach to using biogas as a fuel in the transport sector. Jörg Fischer, EnviTec Group CFO: “Our business model shows how important it is for plant engineering firms to advance into consumer markets and act in the interests of customers and environmental protection.”
The new business model is intended to promote the use of biogas as a fuel in the transport sector as bio-CNG (compressed natural gas from biomethane). This gives EnviTec as a plant engineering firm as well as operators of biogas and gas upgrading plants the option of further refining the biomethane they produce and utilising this as a fuel. To promote this integrated approach, EnviTec signed a cooperative agreement at the start of this year with BAUER Kompressoren, an established supplier of components for CNG plants. EnviTec Anlagenbau integrates these components into the project-specific design tailored to the respective requirements.
A key contribution to sustainable transport“
From organic waste to the pump – this partnership makes it possible for us to supply and operate all of the processes and components required from a single source,” explains Stefan Laumann, Head of Gas Upgrading at EnviTec’s plant construction division. This approach is especially interesting as a follow-on model for existing biogas plants whose subsidies are due to expire, Laumann adds. And EnviTec is also targeting municipal utilities who are looking to reorient their portfolio for the future.
The bio-CNG can be used as a fuel by many vehicles designed to run on natural gas that are now commercially available. Apart from producing significantly fewer exhaust pollutants, these vehicles are also more economical to drive due to their reduced vehicle tax and lower fuel costs. “The model could also work to improve the as-yet patchy CNG filling station infrastructure in Germany,” Fischer continues. “This is a significant contribution to the move to sustainable transport now being discussed in Germany.” The concept has already been field-tested. “In China, we’ve already completed three such projects that use bio-CNG as fuel,” Laumann reports.
Biogas partnership competition
The dena award, now in its tenth year, was presented on 7 December as part of the ‘Biogas Partner Conference’ organised by the German Energy Agency in Berlin. Dena organises the ‘Biogas Partnership of the Year’ competition as part of its ‘Biogas Partner’ project. The aim of the competition is to recognise innovative and sustainable projects for feeding biogas into the natural gas network, as well as innovative products, services, business models and distribution concepts related to biogas feed-in.
