E.ON`s new offshore wind farm in UK produces first power
Power has been produced for the first time today at E.ON’s Robin Rigg wind farm, in the Solway Firth off the coast of Scotland. It marks an important milestone for UK offshore wind generation. On its completion later this year, Robin Rigg will produce 180 MW of renewable power and will be one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farms. The 60 turbines, which have now all been installed, will produce enough power to supply around 120,000 homes with electricity1.
Compared with conventional generation units, the 60 offshore turbines will save approximately 230,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The total investment figure for the project is around € 400 million.
“With over 1000MW of projects in operation and construction, E.ON has developed the skills to tackle the main challenges of the offshore wind business“ said Frank Mastiaux, CEO of E.ON Climate & Renewables. “This is another great achievement for the team, and underlines E.ON’s growing expertise in this vital part of the Renewables industry”.
The beginning of the commissioning stage of Robin Rigg underlines E.ON’s leading position in offshore wind. Since 2004, the company has operated the 60 MW Scroby Sands wind farm, situated off the coast of Norfolk, UK. In Denmark, 166 MW of electricity is generated from the Nysted wind farm in the Baltic Sea, which also came on line in 2004, and is operated with our partner DONG Energy.
Today, construction work is underway on the 200 MW Rödsand II wind farm, which is scheduled for completion in 2010. Work is also continuing in the North Sea off the coast of Germany, where E.ON is building the country’s first offshore wind farm alpha ventus, with partners EWE and Vattenfall. The 60 MW wind farm.will be powered by 12 huge 5MW turbines, and has a project investment figure of over €250 million. The first power from alpha ventus flowed into the German electricity grid in mid August.
E.ON is a leader in offshore wind and will invest € 8 billion in all renewable activities from 2007 - 2011.
