EU Commissioner Piebalgs attends international conference on biofuels
Commissioner Piebalgs has been participating in the International Biofuels Conference taking place in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 17 to 21 November. Fifty Ministers including many from developing countries attended the Conference at which Commissioner Piebalgs emphasized the potential benefits of international cooperation on biofuels.
'Biofuels is a key element to reach the ambitious targets set by the draft directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources' said Commissioner Piebalgs. This proposal is aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy sources in EU energy consumption to 20% in 2020. The draft directive contains a specific 10% target for renewables in transport which is expected to be met largely by biofuels.
The 10% binding target is an opportunity for foreign partners to export biofuels to the EU market. The implementation of sustainability standards will require an extra effort from producers but will ensure that use of biofuels will not contradict environmental goals. The European Commission will also monitor and report regularly on the effects of European biofuels policy on food prices, although the current analysis indicates that there is little impact.
The International Biofuels Conference is the occasion to discuss all aspects of biofuels, including security of supply, sustainability and development of second generation biofuels. This event is a follow-up to the 2007 Brussels International Biofuels Conference, which was a first step towards a transparent and frank dialogue with all stakeholders for a credible and sustainable international biofuels market.
