Final four short-listed for Herts PFI
Source: Materials Recycling Week
The final four bidders in the shortlist for the £200 million Hertfordshire waste PFI have been announced.
E.ON Energy from Waste AG, MVV Umwelt GmbH, Shanks PFI Investments/Wheelabrator Technologies and Veolia ES Aurora are all competing for the contract to treat 320,000 tonnes of waste each year. Covanta Energy and Sita UK were unsuccessful in their bids.
Although the local authority has remained technology-neutral, each of the shortlisted bidders have proposed energy from waste technology as the best solution.
Hertfordshire County Council executive member for waste Derrick Ashley said: “An energy from waste plant will enable the recovery of energy from household waste that isn’t recycled. At the moment, in Hertfordshire that’s the equivalent of two Wembley stadiums full of waste. Rather than rotting in landfill, this waste could supply power and heat to local homes and businesses.”
All four bidders are looking at various sites before they choose, which one they will put forward in the next bidding stage.
