Gasification plant to join London sustainable industries park
A 100,000 tonne a year gasification plant is set to join Close Loop Recycling’s plastics facility on the Government-backed Thames Gateway recycling park. Government agency, the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, announced a deal with waste company Cyclamax to build a gasification plant at the 25 hectare Sustainable Industries Park in Dagenham, east London.
The facility will process commercial waste into up to 15 mega watts of power a year, which is enough to supply electricity to 20,000 homes. A planning application for the plant will be submitted this summer and developers aim to have it operational by 2012. It will be Cyclamax’s fourth plant under development. The company already has two at the planning stage at Sheepbridge and Avonmouth resource parks, with a third to be announced this week.
Cyclamax technical director Rick Twomey explained that the facility will use a technology, which has been running at a Scotgen gasification plant in Dumfries, Scotland, since 2005 and is due to open this month.
Commenting on the London SIP an LTGDC spokeswoman said: “London really needs the park and it could be used as a model for other parks [around the UK]. No other European city has one [recycling park] on its doorstep.”
LTGDC deputy director of development Mark Bradbury said: “[London SIP] provides access to Europe’s largest urban area and has an unrivalled source of raw materials and a multi-billion pound marketplace on the doorstep.”
Gasification is a strong contender to process much of London’s waste as Waste2Tricity also recently announced a bid to provide its gasification technology for the London Waste & Recycling Board’s energy-to-waste contract.
LTGDC said environmental technology businesses are expected to be worth £45bn to the UK economy by 2016.
