Government agrees gasification worthy of renewables obligation certificate
Gasification has qualified for Government subsidies under the Renewables Obligation system offering support to businesses developing the technology. This sector advance follows a Government decision to amend its proposed changes to legislation, which would have altered the definition of gasification.
These changes could have stopped projects based on their feed stock, rather than the technology itself.
Energy from waste company Energos, part of Salford-based sustainable power group ENER-G, was supported by local MP and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Hazel Blears. She raised the issue among fellow ministers.
Blears said: “ENER-G is a go ahead UK business that is making a huge contribution to a lower carbon world. Its pioneering technologies, particularly its gasification process, will help the country towards achieving its renewables target and to divert waste from landfill. I was very pleased to help common sense prevail in stopping legislative changes that could have slowed the company’s valuable investment programme.”
Development of standard gasification and advanced gasification technologies can now go ahead with subsidies guaranteed. Advanced conversion technologies using standard gasification, achieving a minimum energy content of 2MJ/m3, will received one Renewables Obligation Certificate (ROC). But companies using advanced gasification, achieving a minimum energy content of 4MJ /m3, such as Energos, will qualify for double ROCs.
Energos managing director Nick Dawber said: “Now we have clarification on this matter from Government we can press ahead with exciting plans to roll out our technology across the UK.
This decision has made possible an exciting new venture with United Utilities and Interserve to build an advanced thermal conversion waste facility in Derbyshire, creating 38 full-time jobs.”
