Green concrete for Belgium
For the new development of a 2,4 MWel coferment plant in Belgium, PlanET Biogastechnik firstly inserted low CO2 and especially biogas resistant concrete in the tank construction. Only during this project, PlanET already saved as much CO2 as a car would have discharged in 1.4 billion kilometres.
The intention of the project in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium, in Flanders, is currently one of two big coferment plants, which are built by the Dutch employees of PlanET Thecogas BV. The technical ambitious having a biogas plant in Belgium has next to hydrolysis, vacuum pumping system, digestate dehydration and external gas storage with 5.000m³ volume acquired, the quality standard of a green energy project. “For the construction we have solely used “green concrete”, explained Arthur Gervink, responsible PlanET project engineer for Benelux.“ This concrete has an unique pH- resistance, because the concrete entry is effected to the exclusion of O2.
“Through this manufacturing method a protective coating with epoxy resin inside the digester is not necessary anymore and also has a reliable protection against biochemical reactions,” adds Gervink. Because of the good environmental compatibility as well as the additional cost saving Gervink assumes that the use of the especially pertinacious concrete will accomplish more and more. After successful finishing of the concrete work for the tank construction, the PlanET team anticipates that in Flanders the first of three combined heat and power units will be commissioned in February 2009. The second construction site of Thecogas PlanET Biogastechniek BV already produced gas at the turn of the year. The 2 MWel coferment plant near Groningen has been realized in a record time of six month. With almost 20MWel installed capacity in the Netherlands, PlanET Biogastechnik is therewith market leader in the European neighbouring country.
