Grid Integration of Large Scale Renewables in the MENA Region
Renewables Academy starts a new capacity building project for Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia on grid integration of renewable energies.
In order to empower professionals in the MENA region to be able to cope with high volumes of renewable energy power in their electricity systems, the Renewables Academy AG (RENAC) was commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety to provide a new three years’ program “Capacity Building on Integration of Large Amounts of Renewable Energies in the Electricity Grids in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia (ReGrid)”.
Targeting professionals in ministries, energy service companies, grid operators, financing institutions, law firms, and NGOs, the ReGrid-program offers different kinds of trainings, networking and exchange of experiences. The ReGrid project will demonstrate how a high amount of renewable energy can be safely integrated into the electricity supply and which steps are essential for implementation.
The program will discuss and address currents issues such as: “How will the energy supply system be safe even with high amounts of fluctuating wind and solar energy? Which grid codes enable high amounts of renewables? How can grid operators balance the energy system? How can we reduce forecast errors for wind and solar power? How to cover the rising energy demand using fluctuating renewables? What are the costs of grid integration?”
To achieve a maximum of effectiveness the capacity building program will combine online seminars (webinars), seminars held in Berlin and mobile exhibitions. Themes covered by ReGrid include the basics of renewable technologies, framework conditions and specific topics on grid integration like advanced grid codes, balancing and reserve power, capacity planning and peak load coverage, frequency and voltage control.
The project is part of the International Climate Initiative (ICI). The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety supports the initiative following a decision of the German Bundestag.
