Heat exchanger blockages eliminated and acid cleaning no longer required
Source: Fluid Dynamics International Ltd
Kaish Foods is one of the oldest food Companies in Jordan, established in 1926. The water in Amman the capital of Jordan is hard with the impact that the shell and tube heat exchanger in the Tetra-Pak machine used become increasingly inefficient and then after 500 hours of operation would become blocked with scale and the production process would have to be stopped whilst the heat exchanger was first drilled out to remove the scale and then acid washed. Downtime and loss of production could amount to almost half a day while the cleaning process was completed.
In September 2006 The company fitted a Colloid-A-Tron catalytic scale prevention system to the inlet of the heat exchanger.
The Colloid-A-Tron is composed of a special catalytic alloy housed in a pipe that has the effect of neutralising calcium carbonate so it does not form scale. The Colloid-A-Tron is simply fitted into the pipework and requires no maintenance or electrical connections.
The heat exchanger has now run for more than two years without needing acid cleaning or drilling out. The savings in downtime and lost production are significant and there is no issue of disposal and handling of dangerous acids. Kaish have since fitted Colloid-A-Tron units to their bottle capping machine and are planning to fit yet more units in their factory.
