Industry stakeholders meet EC energy commissioner over energy and climate package
EC energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs is today in the German state of Sachsen-Anhalt, meeting industry and other stakeholders over the EU's energy and climate package.
The Commissioner will be accompanied during his visit by the Minister of Economic Affairs of Sachsen-Anhalt, Dr Reiner Haseloff. He will meet the state's Minister-President Dr Wolfgang Böhmer and representatives of industry and other stakeholders with an interest in renewable energy.
The visit will offer an opportunity to exchange views about the climate and energy package adopted by the Commission in January. This package includes a Directive ensuring that 20% of the EU's energy needs will be met from renewable sources by 2020.
The Commissioner will also hear about developments in the field of renewable energy in Sachsen-Anhalt, and tomorrow he will visit a best-practice example of a combined heat and power plant including renewable energy generation from biogas and solar thermal sources.
'It is vital that we take action now to stop climate change, safeguard our energy security and maintain competitiveness. With its climate and energy package the European Union is showing that it is possible to tackle these challenges.
'The binding targets on renewable energy and on reduction of greenhouse gases in the package are setting the standards for the international community to follow.
'But it's at the local and regional level where the targets have to be turned into reality. Sachsen-Anhalt has already achieved strong growth on renewable energy, and I look forward to discussing how the European initiatives can help to go even further', said Piebalgs.
