Intelligent solar house competes for efficiency title in US
Built by students from the Technical University (TU) of Darmstadt, Germany, the solar house is being shipped in pieces and will be reconstructed in the U.S. capital. In mid-October it will compete against 19 other solar houses in the U.S. Department of Energy's international Solar Decathlon.
The house showcases ABB's technology lead in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficient building control.
The contest takes place along the National Mall, where a solar village will be constructed between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol. The nearby White House will be able to observe the competition, which is drawing entries and students from around the world.
'Our sales network worked perfectly during the project,' says ABB Germany automation products specialist Bernd Wagner, who together with colleague Bernd Jung coordinated with TU on the project from the beginning about six months ago.
'The university’s faculty for architecture and electrical engineering was looking for a reliable partner for this project,' Wagner said.
The students closely examined ABB products at a electrical engineering trade show in Stuttgart, and after several meetings identified the necessary materials and products. The house took shape during the summer on the TU campus, where ABB intelligent building components were installed: KNX-devices, distribution cabinets and a building control system.
“We didn’t just want to be sponsors of the project, but felt we had to convince TU that our products and know-how was best-suited to their needs. And this worked out pefectly,” said Wagner.
“We are happy to have found a reliable and innovative partner like ABB for this project. ABB’s products met all of our requirements,” added Thomas Hartkopf, who holds the TU chair for renewable energies.
The Atlantic crossing is expected to take about a month. The solar house will be rebuilt in Washington by mid-October in time to compete with student teams from around the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Spain and Germany. The winner will be announced on October 17.
TU won a previous solar decathalon two years ago. Next year, the solar house will be back in Darmstadt, where customers will be able to see for themselves the advantages of ABB technology.
