Joint wind farms in the Baltic Sea?
The countries around the Baltic Sea could collaborate on joint wind farms in the common sea. This proposal was raised when Nordic and Baltic politicians discussed various scenarios for energy supplies in the Baltic Sea Region in the Danish parliament on 20 October. The goal is to halve the CO2 emissions and oil consumption in 2030 compared to the levels in 1990.
Parliamentarians from the countries around the Baltic Sea are gathered in BSPC, The Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference. It has set up two working groups. The one on energy and climate met in Copenhagen. The consultancy company EA Energy Analyses has previously calculated future scenarios for energy supplies for Denmark and the European Parliament respectively. Yesterday a couple of the scenarios were presented to the Baltic Sea Region. Altogether the region uses more coal and renewable energy that the EU average. The one scenario builds on storage of CO2 and large nuclear power plants, while the other aims at smaller companies and even greater use of renewable energy.
Solar energy is naturally more attractive in southern Europe. However, in northern Europe there is potential for greater exploitation of biomass and wind power. It is most windy along the western coasts of Norway and Denmark, but in parts of the Baltic Sea there is also basis for several wind farms. It was proposed that the countries could join forces on these major and expensive investments. On the other hand power lines towards the west and east would connect the Baltic countries with the Nordic region and the rest of western Europe.
Last year climate policy was the main theme at the Nordic Council Session. This year there is focus on globalisation and the financial crisis, but there will also be debate on climate change as well as a strategy for sustainable development. When the Baltic Development Forum, BDF, holds this year’s summit in the Øresund Region in Copenhagen and in Malmø from 30 November to 2 December, the theme will be energy and the climate.
