Leading lime producer teams up with Energos to build energy-from-waste facility
Source: Materials Recycling Week
Singleton Birch, the UK’s leading lime producer, has appointed Energos as preferred technology partner for its £40 million advanced thermal technology facility.
The plant will be built at the Singleton Birch site in North Lincolnshire and the firm hopes to cut its carbon footprint by producing renewable electricity.
The facility will treat 80,000 tonnes of local waste and biomass materials per year which might include leftover household waste that cannot be recycled.
Energos recently opened the UK’s first advanced thermal conversion plant applied to municipal waste on the Isle of Wight (see MRW story).
It will start construction on an energy-from-waste plant in Irvin, Scotland, this year and is in the process of building another Norwegian plant in Sarpsborg.
Singleton Birch technical director Martin Haworth said: “We will lower our carbon footprint by powering our plant from recycled electricity generation. The Government’s Carbon Trust has been helping us to explore the feasibility of recycling the heat.”
