Local authority cuts could delay wind farm decisions
Source: Environmental Protection UK
In their latest state of the industry report, trade body Renewable UK found that the approval rate for onshore wind fell in the past year - to 55% of applications compared to 83% in the previous year.
The industry express concern that pending planning reforms in England – such as the abolition of regional spatial strategies and proposals to limit applicants' right of appeal could have 'a significant impact on future patterns of decision making'. In addition, they express concern that local authority budget cuts could affect their ability to make timely and accurate decisions. Also, applicants are now looking to develop more difficult sites which will make it harder to obtain planning permission. Furthermore, applicants are moving into 'more difficult sites' which make it harder for them to obtain planning permission. This is particularly the case in Scotland. However, industry fears that renewable targets might not be met do seem overstated. Also, times for local decisions have fallen to 15 months.
Environmental Protection UK are working with local authorities, consultants and industry to find constructive ways forward for the deployment of wind turbines, without undue impacts on potential wind farm neighbours.
