Making solar energy more affordable - REC wins 2011 solar industry award for new innovative production of granular polysilicon
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Today, REC received the 2011 Solar Industry Award for the Innovative REC proprietary Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) Process, which significantly reduces the energy required to produce Solar Grade polysilicon. This unique technology makes REC the first company to produce solar PV modules with a one (1) year energy payback time. REC is the world’s largest producer of granular polysilicon.
REC’s Granular Polysilicon, produced in the FBR process and marketed as NextSi™, additionally offers several benefits to the end user. NextSi™ Granular Polysilicon enhances the efficiency of the PV ingot manufacturing process by increasing the amount of yieldable ingot that can be harvested during a production cycle thereby increasing throughput, reducing production cost and increasing profit.
The prize is awarded by Solar Industry Magazine and was announced during EUPVSEC, the solar industry’s most important technology conference. The winners were selected by voters representing leading players in the solar industry. This is the second time in a row that REC receives the Solar Industry Award.
Ron Reis, Vice President, Technology, REC Silicon stated, “I am excited to accept this award recognizing the efforts of our REC Silicon team in developing the FBR technology and bringing it to scale. The FBR technology not only solidifies our leading cost position as a producer of polysilicon, it also provides our customers with a quality product they find very effective in their production processes.”
REC produces polysilicon at two facilities located in the Western US and has an industry leading position, being the no. 1 producer of Granular Polysilicon, Float Zone (high purity Polysilicon) and Silane Gases.
