Minnesota Commerce Department Offers Incentives to Install Solar
January and February may be the coldest months in Minnesota, but they’re also a time when the state’s commerce department focuses on promoting something much warmer: Energy from the sun.
Through its Made in Minnesota Solar Program, the North Star State offers incentives to consumers who agree to install solar modules and collectors built by local manufacturers. Such parts are added onto PV and solar thermal systems as a means to achieve energy efficiency.
“The Made In MN incentive program gives Minnesota businesses the opportunity to capitalize on installing solar with high rebates to offset a large portion of their energy bill with a 40 kW DC system,” remarked Jillian O’Brien, a communications manager for Ideal Energies, just one of the companies partnering with the Minnesota Commerce Department on the initiative. “This incentive dramatically lowers the cost of a solar energy system, thus making solar power less expensive than power from their utility company.”
Created by the legislature back in 2013, the program will dole out $250,000 annually in rebates – just part of an overall $15 million budget approved to be spent through the program over a 10-year period.
Both Minnesota businesses and residents are eligible to apply – but must be customers of one of the following utility providers: Xcel Energy, Otter Tail Power, or Minnesota Power. The application period will conclude on February 28th, with those approved being chosen at random through a lottery system.
