New funds for Northern European Innovative Energy Research Cooperation programme
The Nordic-German cooperation in energy research will launch a new call for innovative energy research proposals in the beginning of 2009. This will provide funding for research collaboration between excellent research communities in Northern Europe. Further it will consolidate the ties between the national funding agencies and research councils in the Nordic countries and Germany. New funding agencies are welcome in the programme.
During the last couple of years, national funding agencies and research councils in the Nordic countries and Germany have cooperated in the Northern European Innovative Energy Research (N-INNER) programme. These are Academy of Finland, the Research Council of Norway, the Swedish Energy Agency, the Danish Council for Strategic Research, Projektträger Jülich in Germany, Orkustofnun in Iceland and Nordic Energy Research.
This programme was initiated under the INNER-ERA net, an EU coordination action to make joint programming and common calls between the Member States. The task of organising the call for proposals and all the practicalities between agencies in the N-INNER programme has been done by senior advisor Lise Jørstad, Nordisk Energy Research. Recently, the partners in the N-INNER programme agreed to continue the programme and seek new funding for another call for proposals.
'The ERA nets are designed to strengthen research cooperation in the EU, Lise Jørstad says, and I think we have been really successful in that respect in the N-INNER programme. Cooperation between the funding agencies has been running smoothly, and five excellent basic research projects in solar energy, bioenergy and fuel cells are now well underway.'
As Nordic Energy Research was the only one of the partners who had experience from organising international calls, the task of managing the call process, organising the international review of proposals and preparing meetings in the Programme Steering Committee was given to Nordic Energy Research.
'With the successful navigation of the N-INNER programme, we have gained further insight and competence in the challenging task of preparing and coordinating international research programmes', says Lise Jørstad. 'With a second call for proposals we will take yet another important step towards a North European Research Area in innovative energy research. This is exciting.'.
Since the N-INNER programme was granted a second term, discussions have begun about who else might be interested in participating. So far, there has been interesting discussions with national funding agencies and research council in Estonia, Latvia and Spain, and more countries may join in.
'Last time we managed to get the funding partners together rather quickly, and to launch a call for proposals not long after the first decisions among the partners were made, we hope to continue this success in the next period', says Jørstad.
The new N-INNER call will be around the same size as the last one; about 6 million Euros.
