New reports cast doubt over biofuel policy
Source: Environmental Protection UK
Two separate reports reviewing the indirect land use change (ILUC) impacts of biofuel crops have stressed the importance of factoring ILUC impacts into biofuel policies to ensure use of biofuels do not result in higher greenhouse gas emissions (GhG) than their fossil fuel alternatives.
The Department for Transport (DfT) commissioned E4Tech to study the impacts of five biofuel streams which are expected to form the bulk of UK supply over the next decade. Conclusions show that use of biofuels could result in a net increase of GhG emissions.
On the EU stage, the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) have analysed the anticipated effects of ILUC with damaging conclusions for EU biofuel policy.
David Baldock, Executive Director IEEP, said: 'Promoting the use of biofuels with no consideration of indirect land use change (ILUC) has the potential actually to increase the EU's greenhouse gas emissions.
It is vital that this situation is rectified and ILUC impacts are urgently addressed within EU law. It is essential to remember that the renewable energy Directive, which is driving EU biofuel use, was adopted to help combat climate change.'
