- By: Steven MastersOn April 15th, 2014 New Sky was selected as a finalist in the Climate Change & Emissions Management Corporation Grand Challenge. The CCEMC Grand Challenge is an Alberta-based $35M grant program that funds important emerging technologies to capture and utilize carbon dioxide. As a Grand Challenge finalist New Sky will receive $500K over the next two years to fund development of its innovative SulfurCycle-CO2 mineralization process, and an opportunity to compete for $3M and $10M CCEMC grant awards in 2015 and 2017.
New Sky’s SulfurCycle Process captures and mineralizes CO2 during sour gas sweetening. The process regenerates the H2S-CO2 capture agent in an energy efficient New Sky reactor that utilizes energy derived from the captured sulfur. This greatly reduces the cost and energy footprint of sour gas sweetening, a global oil and gas industry problem, while producing industrially useful carbonates for sale or use onsite. Alberta has abundant sour gas reserves and other mineral and energy resources that are ideally suited for application of New Sky’s CO2 capture technologies. New Sky thanks CCEMC and the government of Alberta for its generous support. For more information on the innovative SulfurCycle-CO2 mineralization process, please view the video below.
