Only two sites now in the running for South West Devon Waste Partnership EfW facility
Source: Materials Recycling Week
Plans to build an incinerator at Ernesettle in Plymouth have been dropped by waste management firm MVV Umwelt.
The site at Ernesettle was one of three in the running under the South West Devon Waste Partnerships plan to deal with waste across South Devon for the next 25 years.
MVV Umwelt initially proposed two sites, the incinerator at Ernesettle and a separate energy from waste facility at North Yard, Devonport.
However, it has announced this week that it will focus solely on the plans for North Yard.
SWDWP project director Mark Turner said: “We have always been aware the MVV would only be likely to take one proposal through to the final tender stage, so this is not entirely unexpected.”
MVV Environment managing director Paul Carey said: “North Yard offers many environment and economic advantages over Ernesettle.”
The Ernesettle site remains allocated within Plymouth City Council’s planning framework and is classed as being suitable for strategic waste management facilities which may include the site being used as such in the future.
This move by MVV leaves only two sites in the running for the SWDWP project, the other being an incinerator at New England Quarry, Lee Mill, proposed by Viridor which is currently facing stiff opposition from local residents.
