Professor Kai Sipilä, Finland, awarded for Europe’s top bioenergy prize at the 19th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, Berlin
The Johannes Linneborn Prize for Achievements in Biomass Development was awarded today on the occasion of the 19th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition in Berlin, Germany, to Professor Kai Sipilä, Vice President Strategic Energy Research, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT).
The prize was awarded for his leadership in development of biomass conversion technologies and for promoting biomass as a sustainable energy source within Finland, in many aspects a forerunner country in biomass, in the European Union and worldwide for more than 25 years. Trained as a chemical engineer at the Helsinki University of technology in Finland, in his career he acquired impressive abilities for process development showing creative and practical solutions like the combined combustion/pyrolysis process of VTT which drew a lot of attention. His interests and successful activities however, cover an integrated bioenergy approach, including all kinds of thermo-chemical conversion technologies, waste to energy and material recycling systems, alternative motor fuel production, renewable energy systems, refining of biomass, energy and climate issues, to name a few.
Working for VTT, Professor Sipilä contributed to an extensive list of publications and reports and
10 patents. Apart from his technical papers, he delivered a long row of authoritative reviews and overviews on biomass energy, biofuels and material resources at conferences, workshops etc. which had a lot of influence on the R&D and implementation agendas in the biomass field.
Kai Sipilä coordinates the EERA Bioenergy Joint program. He also was the coordinator of the Bioenergy Network of Excellence in the 6th Research Framework Programme of the EU, the chairman of the national biofuel implementation team, IEA Bioenergy Agreement Executive Committee Representative for Finland from 1993 and vice-chairman in 2003.
Background “The Johannes Linneborn Prize”
The Johannes Linneborn Prize was established in 1994 for outstanding contributions to the development of energy from biomass. Johannes Linneborn, lived from 1899 to 1991 and was a pioneer in modern biomass utilisation. In his professional life of almost 70 years, his interests covered a wide range of activities from agriculture, energy and transport to health and nutrition. His credo was the necessity to integrate all human activities into the natural cycle of life. The Linneborn Prize is awarded at the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition series (www.biomass-conference.com), the biggest event of its kind.
Event Background of the EU BC&E
For over 30 years now, the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (European BC&E) has combined a very renowned international Scientific Conference with an Industry Exhibition. Since 2007 the Conference and Exhibition takes place every year. The European BC&E is held at different venues throughout Europe and ranks on top of the world's leading events in the Biomass sector.
This event is supported by European and international organizations such as the European Commission, BMU the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Natural Sciences Sector, WCRE - the World Council for Renewable Energy, EUBIA - the European Biomass Industry Association, the German biomass energy use programme and other organizations.
The Conference is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety based on an act of the German Parliament in the framework of the National Climate Initiative.
The 19th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition is organised by WIP-Renewable Energies with the international support of ETA-Florence Renewable Energies and the scientific support of the European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre.
