Public inquiry into controversial incinerator begins
A public inquiry into a plan to build a £117m incinerator, which faces tough opposition from residents, has got underway in Cornwall.
The inquiry relates to a plan submitted by SITA UK to build an incinerator with a 390ft chimney at St Dennis, near St Austell. Cornwall Council rejected a planning application in March last year on the grounds of visual impact, noise, and inadequate consideration of alternatives.
SITA began its appeal against this decision at Kingsley Village in Cornwall on 16 March, represented by Richard Phillips QC.
Phillips said: “Without this proposal, it is not an exaggeration to say that Cornwall will face a waste management crisis.”
The incinerator faces a campaign of opposition from local residents who have formed the St Dennis Anti Incinerator Group (STIG), which hopes to encourage the council to investigate alternative forms of waste disposal.
John Lloyd, a barrister representing objectors from St Dennis, including the members of STIG, said: “We will show the scale, massing and height of the two main buildings and how the chimney would adversely affect the landscape character of the area and harm visual amenity for local residents.”
