Public Service Electric and Gas of New Jersey Goes Live with OSI Distribution Management Platform
August 8, 2017 -- Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has successfully completed implementation of a major centralized Distribution Management platform for Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) of New Jersey. A part of PSE&G's Energy Strong program, this project has been implemented to increase the resiliency of the company's electric delivery system and to improve the overall system performance, availability, situational awareness, and security of PSE&G's distribution operations. The Distribution Management platform is a SCADA-centric platform and includes Distribution SCADA as the principal phase, followed by subsequent phases for Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) applications and an Outage Management System (OMS).
PSE&G is one of the largest combined electric and gas companies in the United States and is New Jersey's oldest and largest publicly owned utility. The company services 1.8 million gas customers and 2.2 million electric customers in more than 300 urban, suburban, and rural communities, including New Jersey's six largest cities.
PSE&G's Energy Strong program is a multi-year initiative that is designed to harden electric and gas infrastructure and improve the durability and stability of their energy distribution infrastructure, making it better able to withstand the impacts of hurricanes and other severe weather events, and enabling a faster response to customers and outages than would otherwise be feasible. In addition, the program's investments will increase the resiliency of PSE&G's electric delivery system, allowing it to recover more quickly from damage to any of its components or to any of the external systems on which it depends.
This project consolidated four regional systems and established common standards and processes across the enterprise. The system was designed and implemented to meet NERC regulatory requirements as if they were currently applicable to distribution systems. In addition, the system architecture provides a modern real-time platform for the implementation of ADMS capabilities and establishes a robust quality assurance environment to conform to current best practices for change management and maintaining critical distribution infrastructure.
'The D-SCADA system is a critical component of our Energy Strong program,' said John Latka, PSE&G's SVP of Electric & Gas Operations. 'The successful implementation of OSI's D-SCADA technology is a major milestone in our plans for grid modernization and allows us to build a truly advanced distribution operation.'
'We are proud to be PSE&G's partner in the implementation of one of the largest and most modern D-SCADA systems in the industry,' said Hormoz Kazemzadeh, OSI's vice president of distribution and Smart Grid. 'OSI's scalable and secure monarch platform allows leading utilities such as PSE&G to build advanced real-time capabilities that meet the evolving needs of their distribution operations.'
