Qualvista Biogas Monitoring completes trial run in WWTP in Oregon U.S. Case Study
Clean Methane Systems and Qualvista have succesfully completed a four-month trial of next generation biogas and siloxane monitoring technology at the City of Gresham WWTP. Clean Methane Systems (http://methanesys.com) is the sales and service partner of Qualvista in North America.
Details
This nondispersive infrared sensor (NDIR) technology gives plant operators the ability to monitor siloxanes down to parts per billion level. Organic compounds like siloxane can do significant damage to equipment and processes at trace levels that have eluded practical in-line monitoring solutions.
The simple and robust Qualvista solution has the ability to detect O2, CH4, H2S, CO2 and siloxane from multiple sample points with a single unit. Beta units are available for evaluation and production units will be available starting in September 2016.
“We have sought a near real time biogas monitor for years without success. So we are thrilled for the first time to have a monitoring system that is both accurate enough and robust enough to deploy in biogas applications.”- Timothy Robinson President of Clean Methane Systems, LLC.
Technology Background:
Cogeneration or CHP systems using biogas are hampered by higher costs associated with gas treatment systems. A significant element of those costs relate to media replacement and/or increased engine maintenance due to higher biogas contamination. Currently the best method for tracking the performance of gas treatment systems is to take samples and send to labs for analysis. This is a less than ideal situation as samples can take days or weeks to get results and those results are often inaccurate due to handling issues and testing procedures.
Intermittent “grab” sampling does not fully characterize the gas quality or identify conditions that may impact or jeopardize equipment. As a result bioenergy systems often lack the ability to be managed as reliably as would be desirable to maximize the system operations and reduce operating costs including downtime.
