Renewable Energy: Opportunities and Mistakes
Robert Leak completed an engineering apprenticeship in 1982 before moving to the Metropolitan Police Service where he progressed to the position of Senior Engineer within their Property Services Department.
In 2005 Robert decided to focus on the growing opportunity presented by renewable energy technologies and the opportunity they presented in providing cost effective solutions to businesses and organisations. He is now the Renewable Energy Manager at energyTEAM and acts as an independent adviser to help businesses review their energy needs and identify the best ways of adding new technologies to their supply mix.
Renewable Energy: Opportunities and Mistakes
In this presentation, Robert provides a brief overview of some of the opportunities and mistakes that can be made by organisations installing renewable energy technologies.
Some of the typical renewable technologies that you may come across include Solar PV, Wind turbines and Hydro which produce electricity or Heat Pumps, Solar Thermal and Biomass which produce heat. You then have Biogas which produces both electricity and heat.
An important first step is understanding why you want to invest in renewable energy. A lot of money is spent on implementing a renewables strategy. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you have a clear goal in mind and ensure that you keep coming back to your original goal throughout your project to make sure that you are ‘on track’.
Renewables are not an ‘off the shelf commodity’. You will need to take a look at your sites and your business in detail to make sure that you implement a solution that is right for your business - and not just something pulled out of a catalogue.
So how do you select the right solution? This is where it pays to have a goal in mind. If you don’t know where you want to get to it can mean you start investing in the wrong technology.
There are a number of financial incentive schemes involved with renewable technologies and they can be a very good long-term attractive investment for your business.
A suggested approach…
- Consider your goal
- Scoping Study – when considering multiple sites
- Feasibility study – clarify the opportunity and financials
- Outline specification
- Suitable procurement process
- Consider planning & grid connectionInstallation & commissioning
- Operation, monitoring & maintenance
- Seek independent advice
- Above all…Keep control and maintain responsibility.

Future Energy Forums
In June 2014, energyTEAM will be hosting two energy forums at the William Conference Centre in Oxford and the Old Trafford Football Stadium in Manchester. energyTEAM’s Energy Forums are specifically designed for Facilities, Energy and Procurement Managers from public and private sector organisations throughout the UK.
These forums will address important and topical business issues including Water Management, Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and Renewable Technologies. The presentations promise inspirational ideas from both a client’s perspective and up-to-date knowledge from a number of energy and water specialists.
