Renewable Hybrid Power Plants: Exploring the benefits and market opportunities
July 16, 2019 -- This paper explores the benefits and market opportunities for Hybrid Power Plants (HPPs). As the share
of variable renewable energy in power grids increases, a discussion on the potential advantages of HPPs,
comprising wind or other renewables, with or without storage, has been evolving.
Currently, the number of such HPPs under development or already operating in Europe is very limited.
Their business case is still under development or evaluation. The foreseen advantages of wind-solar HPPs
seem however promising. These relate to cost effective integration of variable renewable energy sources
(RES) in the system which is primordial in view of the EU decarbonisation target for 2050. Besides, the
revolving digitalisation of the power system is expected to unleash the full potential of hybrid cases.
