Retrofitting of eco products is a `good idea`

The founder of whatgreenhome.com Gordon Miller has said that the government's Greener Homes Strategy is a good start; however, he has his concerns.
Mr Miller's worries lie with the implementation of the plans and how to encourage people to take up the scheme.
'It is a good idea in principle but obviously the detail is everything in this, how they are actually going to administer the programme,' said the environmental building expert.
He added: 'Clearly retrofitting and bringing the existing homes up to speed is absolutely critical if we are going to meet our own emissions targets and reduce CO2 emissions.'
Mr Miller's comments follow the government's announcement that it plans to follow a three stage strategy in order to improve the energy efficiency of Britain's homes.
The first stage is to insulate six million homes by the end of 2011.
Secondly, all practical lofts and cavity walls are to be insulated by 2015 and finally, seven million 'eco upgrades' are to be offered by 2020 along with the installation of smart meters in all homes.
As Mr Miller noted, 'the estimates are that around 75 per cent of the existing housing stock will still be around by 2050', making it vital that energy saving products are fitted to existing homes and not just new-builds.
