RWE Innogy builds biogas plant in Saxony-Anhalt
RWE Innogy is going to build a biogas plant with a thermal capacity of approx. 6.5 megawatts in the municipality of Güterglück in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. From the summer of 2009, the site is to produce biogas which will be processed to meet natural gas specifications and fed into the local natural gas network. The general contractor for the construction of the biogas plant is Hese Biogas GmbH in Gelsenkirchen, a company of the Schmack Biogas group. Construction is scheduled to commence in October 2008.
'It is our aim to markedly increase our biogas activities in Germany and build another 10 plants of this type by 2012. Under our Green Gecco project, we would like to offer interested municipal utilities the opportunity to acquire shares in these plants', emphasised Prof. Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Innogy, adding: 'With Hese Biogas we have found a competent partner for the long term'. Both companies have signed a letter of intent to implement their construction plans. Werner Rüberg, Chief Executive Officer of Schmack Biogas AG: 'We at the Schmack group are pleased to team up with RWE Innogy for this showcase of biogas processing.'
The advantage of this technology is that the processed biogas can be shipped through the public natural gas grid to local combined heat-and-power sites which are situated far away from the biogas plant. RWE's sales subsidiary, Dortmund-based RWE Energy, will market the biogas. The feedstock for the plant will be acquired through cooperative ventures with regional farmers. More than 50,000 tons of renewable raw materials will be used in this way every year – mainly corn silage, but also liquid manure. More than 15,000 cubic meters of gas will be fed into the grid every day. This corresponds to a gas production of approx. 50 million kilowatt-hours a year, enough to supply a combined heat-and-power station with a capacity of 3 MWel with gas 24 hours a day.
Since May 2007, RWE Innogy has been operating a biogas power plant in Grevenbroich-Neurath in the Rhenish district of Neuss (NRW). This plant, which was also built by Hese Biogas, has a capacity of 716 kWel and supplies some 1,600 homes with electricity 24 hours a day. The operation of this plant is supported by an extensive research project at the University of Bochum which is sponsored by RWE. The project aims to further improve the efficiency of biogas technology.
