Source: Energy Saving Trust
Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond has opened the Scottish European Green Energy Centre (SEGEC). The European Regional Development Fund is to provide GBP1.6 million worth of funding while the Scottish government is also planning to invest GBP1 million in the project.
Offshore wind, marine energy, carbon capture and storage and renewable heat will be some of the areas the fund will focus on.
Mr Salmond said: 'The SEGEC aims to build on Aberdeen's long-established global reputation as an energy hub by positioning Scotland at the forefront of European innovation, research and development in clean, renewable energy.
'The GBP1.6 million investment of European funding will, through SEGEC, embrace the energy related opportunities presented through Scotland's leading global effort to reduce climate change. Scotland's natural capital can create tens of thousands of green jobs.'
Duncan Botting, head of ITI Energy, was recently named as the executive chair of the SEGEC.
Work at the centre will support the Energy Technology Partnership, which is an alliance of Scottish universities focusing on providing research into energy.
