SFA Celebrates World Soil Day as Timely Events Approach
Today, Dec. 5, is World Soil Day, which the United Nations has marked to “celebrate the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human wellbeing.”
At SFA, soil health is the linchpin to our work. It affects us all, farmer and eater alike. A focus on soil health has the potential to move agriculture toward a sustainable future, providing clean water and combating climate change. SFA’s work, centered on the Five Principles of Soil Health, hopes to shift the paradigm toward that regenerative model.
To that end, we have several upcoming soil health events that we’d like you to know about. You do not need to be an SFA member to attend; however, in some cases, there is a registration discount for current members.
Next week is our “Ranching for Profit” series with Dave Pratt, where we are hosting workshops in four cities: Redwood Falls, Staples, Thief River Falls and Floodwood. At each, Pratt will share his tool box full of simple but effective processes that find win-win solutions for your farm. Each day’s event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and you can learn more and register for each at the series homepage.
On Feb. 9, our SFA Annual Conference returns to St. Joseph, and there will be several soil health sessions: Soil Health for Vegetable and Fruit Growers (a two-part session), Getting to Know Cover Crops, Regenerative Agriculture and Permaculture: The Basics, and others on topics related to soil health such as dairy grazing, marketing grass-fed livestock and achieving water quality goals. REGISTER. Info: Annual Conference homepage.
Finally, on March 12, SFA is hosting our annual Midwest Soil Health Summit at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. This conference, entirely focused on soil health and led by innovative experts, features Dr. David Montgomery, a soil scientist, MacArthur fellow and author who makes a case for agriculture that is profitable and productive, cools the planet and restores life to the land. You won’t want to miss this conference. REGISTER. Info: MSHS homepage.
We hope to see you at these events. And thanks, on this World Soil Day, for all you are doing to support and promote sustainable, regenerative agriculture.
