Solid Biofuels map for the Iberian Peninsual and South America
New factories, more projects
Since we published the latest Solid Biofuels Map for the Iberian Peninsula and South America in April 2014, new pellet factories have been built with large production capacities through the Spanish area.
A major one, for example, is the Naturpellet plant in Segovia, with 30,000 t/year; Ebinor in La Rioja, which began activity at 10,000 t/year and plans to increase that to 20,000 shortly; or the Gesbi factory in Cordoba, which will produce up to 25,000 t/year.
It is also significant that many of these new facilities have decided from the outset to produce other biofuels such as quality chips in order to reach energy consumers other than domestic users.
Installed capacity is now around 900,000 tons per annum, spread out over 50 active plants, 9 more than those on the 2014 map. We have recorded, furthermore, 18 factories currently under construction or being planned, which will provide over 250,000 t/year extra.
Most of the new producers have opted to obtain the ENplus certificate right from the start and, at the time of publishing, 21 enterprises are manufacturing quality pellets, which means there are 7 more than in April 2014.
The number of certified distributors has almost doubled, going from 6 to 11, several of which also produce pellets and other biofuels.
In Portugal the number of certified ENplus producers has doubled. From 4 in 2014, they have gone to 8 certified manufacturers as of March 2015. They appear to be targeting the domestic market instead of sending their pellets for electricity production in Central and Northern Europe. In fact, it has been calculated that in 2014 there were around 60,000 tons of Portuguese pellets imported into Spain.
In South America two large factories have gone into operation in the north of Argentina, one of them with a capacity of 75,000 t/year of capacity. In Chile the consumption of domestic pellets has been growing steadily, which means that an increase in capacity is expected in the coming years.
More chips
As far as chips are concerned, some manufacturers have disappeared but new production centres have been set up with large capacities. On the map we have shown those that guarantee to put quantities of at least 5,000 t/year on the market; a total of 29 producers, 10 more than a year ago. Given the relative operational ease of chip production, all the centres shown on the map could increase their yield if the market required it.
Quality certification for chips is currently at a slow pace, although several chip production centres set up over the last year are implementing the BIOmasud certification system, which means that two or three producers are due to obtain their certificates for this biofuel.
Certified stone
We have included 8 new olive stone producers, practically all of which are located in the Jaen-Cordoba olive growing region. The one producer certified in 2014, Energía Sierra Segura, in Albacete, has been joined by Ecoloma in Jaén in 2015. Furthermore, the first pine kernel shell producer has now been certified in Portugal.
