“Sun . . . Camera . . . Action!”: Metropolitan Water District’s Solar Cup—Nation’s Largest Solar-Powered Boat Competition—Gears up for Three Days of Racing, Beginning Next Friday, May 13

WHAT: | Hundreds of students from 40 high school teams throughout Southern California are making final run-throughs and adjustments to their single-seat, solar-powered 16-foot boats in preparation for Metropolitan’s ninth annual Solar Cup™ competition. | |||
WHEN: |
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 13-15. Boats are inspected and put through qualifying tests Friday. Saturday features 1.6-kilometer endurance competition using solar-collection panels. Sunday is highlighted by 200-meter sprint races and awards ceremony. |

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES, VISUALS:
In advance of next week’s three-day regatta, teams are making final tweaks to their hand-built boats equipped with solar panels, motors, batteries and steering.This culminates seven months of preparation, study and teamwork.Several teams will be testing their boats in school pools or nearby lakes.Contact Bob Muir or Armando Acuña for the latest developments and photo opportunities.
During competition, reporters, photographers and camera crews may be taken out onto the water for competition close-ups.Team interviews at launch ramp arranged for morning news programs as early as 6 a.m.
PARTICIPANTS:
Solar Cup teams from high schools in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties (see following list). The program, which began in 2002 with just eight teams and about 80 students, has become the nation’s largest solar-powered boat competition. Along the way, Solar Cup has encouraged many participants to attend college and to pursue careers in engineering, science, environmental sciences and communication.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a cooperative of 26 cities and water agencies serving 19 million people in six counties.The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps its members to develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
