Tanzanian Regulatory Authority Grants Artumas a 15 Year Licensing Exemption for the Mtwara Energy Project
Source: Thomson Reuters
Artumas today announced that it has been granted a 15 year licensing exemption by the Electric and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) in Tanzania. This 15 year licensing exemption allows the regional power generation and distribution development project, known as the Mtwara Energy Project (MEP) to proceed in accordance with the 15+ year franchise and exclusivity provisions granted in the long term contracts with the Tanzanian Government (completed 2009). The exemption does not, in any way, relieve the Company from normal annual regulatory scrutiny of its tariffs and service quality. The MEP is geared toward the provision of reliable power to over 45,000 residents of southern Tanzania, and industrial customers expected to locate within the region. According to Cameron Barton (President and CEO), 'Artumas should now be in a position to secure grant and debt financing previously promised to the project which in turn will enable the Company to fulfill its contractual commitments to the Government of Tanzania'.
