Windlab Secures support from UN Environment Programme for East African Development Pipeline
Windlab Africa (Pty) Ltd (Windlab East Africa or WEA) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded support for project development activities by the Seed Capital Assistance Facility (SCAF) managed by UN Environment.
As an innovative public private partnership, SCAF works through private equity funds and project development companies to mobilize early-stage investment for innovative low carbon projects in developing countries of Asia and Africa.
Granted on a cost-sharing basis with WEA, SCAF II support will amount to US$450,000. The award is provided through two support lines: Support line 1, a non-reimbursable grant for pipeline development; and Support line 2, a non-interest bearing conditional grant for projects or ventures development.
WEA’s assets currently consist of 16 projects totalling around 1,650MW of potential capacity under development, ranging in status from early-stage projects to the approved 300MW Miombo Hewani Wind Farm in Tanzania, which has been short-listed in a government sponsored offtake process.
Some of the main activities that WEA intends to undertake with the assistance from SCAF II are wind and solar pre-feasibility modelling for multiple countries in the East Africa region, various environmental and fatal flaw screening assessments as well as grid connection studies. Simultaneously, some of the funds will be allocated to internal capacity building and training for Windlab staff based in East Africa. One of the projects that will benefit from the SCAF assistance is the Meru County Energy Park, an innovative hybrid wind/solar/battery project in Kenya, which is being developed in partnership with the Meru County Government under a Public Private Partnership.
