World Energy Congress - Italian president says energy policies need drastic change
During a meeting with the leaders of the World Energy Congress, the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano called today on world governments to tackle the global energy and environmental challenges.
“It is no longer possible to defer the introduction of drastic changes to energy and environmental policies,” Napolitano said while addressing at the Quirinale a delegation of the organizers of the 20th World Energy Congress led by Wec chairman, André Caillé.
“Governments must implement and manage these changes, and commit to support research, development and the spread of new technologies capable of radically changing how energy is produced and used,” Napolitano said.
His opinion was shared by Congress organizing committee Chicco Testa, who stressed the need to create a new kind of governance for the energy sector.
“International political bodies need new authority,” Testa said. Responding to the President’s appeal to find new environmentally compatible energy solutions, the WEC’s leader highlighted the organization’s commitment in this area.
“Our objective is to encourage a dialogue that may lead to new ideas, to the sharing of information and technologies, with a view to finding answers and solutions capable of ensuring the future of our world and of generations to come,” Caillé said.
The President acknowledged and commended such a role, defining Wec’s congress “an important opportunity for dialogue on a crucial topic for our future.”
“Italy is proud to host an event that will provide a substantial contribution to the international debate on the challenges of energy safety and climate change,” Napolitano told the members of the delegation, which included the Chairman of WEC Italia, Gilberto Callera, and the executive director of the Congress, Carlo Hermes.
