World`s largest biomass power plant combusts KAHL wood pellets
The Bioenergy Europe board meeting took place in York, England, in mid-September. The world's largest biomass power plant, in which wood pellets produced by KAHL pelleting plants are used for alternative combustion, was visited.
The DRAX GROUP is the largest biomass power plant in the world and uses high-quality KAHL wood pellets to generate renewable electricity. Whereas in the past coal firing was mainly used, in recent years four out of six power plant units have already been converted for the firing of biomass pellets. The DRAX power plant alone currently covers about 6% of the British electricity demand (approx. 4,000 mW). According to the company, this will save approximately 86% of CO2 emissions to date.
The four biomass heated blocks consume about 7 million tons of biomass pellets annually. Mainly wood pellets of our KAHL machines (60-1250 and 65-1500) - produced by Enviva and Tanac - are used. Considering that global wood pellet production is around 35 million tons, 20% of this is imported to York alone.
Drax is also a pioneer in carbon capture and recycling of carbon dioxide from combustion gases. A Drax pilot plant can thus already capture one ton of CO2 per day.
The biomass pellet market is growing by two million tons annually. There is no end in sight - especially since other coal-fired power plants are also converting to biomass. Good prospects for machine and plant manufacturers such as AMANDUS KAHL.
