Devco - Anaerobic Digestion Technology
scrubbing out impurities, the biogas becomes renewable natural gas (RNG): a powerful, clean, non-fossil fuel based, and sustainable form of renewable energy. RNG can be utilized wherever natural gas is currently used to power homes, businesses, vehicle fleets, and more. It can be used to generate electricity or even to produce green hydrogen. The RNG and associated biogas markets are poised to expand exponentially in the years to come, led by policy changes, environmental necessity, as well as voluntary customer demand for impactful green energy solutions.
Details
The Federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and expanding state-based Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), along with their associated credit systems, have created monetary incentives for the creation and use of renewable natural gas in the transportation fuel market.
When organics are land-applied or disposed of in landfills, they degrade and emit methane into the atmosphere. Methane is a very damaging greenhouse gas, over 20 times more potent than CO2. In our anaerobic digestion facilities, we capture biogas in a controlled environment and transform it into renewable energy.
Utilities and industrial consumers are working to answer the calls for RNG from their customer bases. These entities across the world have generated demand via growing ESG goals and internal mandates to blend RNG into their energy distribution and consumption profiles.
Biogas, the precursor to RNG, is a powerful, flexible energy resource that can be utilized in others forms in addition to RNG creation. This an important function in today's ever-evolving renewable energy landscape.
Biogas can be used to fuel generator sets that produce electricity for integration into the existing grid - meaning that biogas is a powerful resource in markets pushing for electrification.
When consumed in hydrogen fuel cells, biogas can generate both electricity as well as hydrogen. Additionally, when biogas is converted into RNG, it is an excellent resource for production of green hydrogen, and will thus be a vital aspect of the growing hydrogen market.
Biogas can also be used to fuel boilers or combined heat and power (“CHP”) systems that generate thermal or electrical energy in a “behind-the-meter” system, thus making it an excellent resource in standalone power systems and micro-grids.
Benefits
Homes across the world are already using natural gas to safely and efficiently heat their water heaters, dryers, ovens, stovetops, and more. RNG is pipeline-ready and can be blended with fossil gas or used independently with no modifications or impact to the appliances already in use.
Commercial and industrial operations are among the largest consumers of natural gas for power generation, heating, and cooling purposes for which RNG represents the most readily available replacement to help these companies meet their expanding ESG goals.
For transportation purposes, RNG can be used as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). CNG is a cleaner fuel than diesel, and when combusted, a much less detrimental gas than the methane it is derived from. There has been a steady increase in demand for vehicle fleets to be fueled by RNG, including city buses, delivery trucks, long-haul trucking, and more.
