Production
Enviva Wood Pellets come from wood resources such as chips, bark and sawdust by-products, and to a lesser degree tree tops, branches, and other forestry debris remaining after the primary biomass (tree trunk) has been processed and shipped from the forest. These unprocessed residues would most likely otherwise go unused as a resource. Additional biomass sources currently include low-grade wood fiber and round wood. The wood is milled, dried and pelletized in a specialty press. During the extrusion process, the lignin in the wood plasticizes forming a natural “glue” that holds the pellet together after production.

Additional Benefits of Wood Pellets
As an energy-dense, uniform fuel made from high-quality wood materials, wood pellets offer a range of advantages:
- Wood pellets are efficient as a source of energy—they are reliable and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- On an energy content basis, wood pellets have significantly lower emissions than fossil fuels and unprocessed woody materials.
- Typically, wood pellets have a calorific value of about 17.5 MJ/KG vs. 10.9 MJ/KG for non-pelleted, non-dried wood.
- With a very low-moisture content (5–7 percent vs. 40–60 percent for non-pelleted wood) and low ash (1–2 percent vs. 5 percent for non-pelleted wood) wood pellets ship in standard dry bulk vessels. This maximizes economic efficiency and is environmentally preferable because such vessels can be used to ship freight on the return trip as well.
